Basic Greetings in Spanish

Tú vs. Usted: Understanding Formality

In Spanish, how you address someone depends on your relationship with them. This is a fundamental concept:

  • Informal (Tú): Used with friends, family, children, and people your own age.
  • Formal (Usted): Used with strangers, elders, authority figures (bosses, doctors), and to show respect.

Tip: When in doubt, start with Usted to be polite!

Universal Greetings

These greetings can be used at any time of day:

  • ¡Hola! - Hello! (Casual & Standard)
  • ¿Qué tal? - How's it going? (Casual)

Time-Specific Greetings

In Spanish, we change our greeting depending on the time of day:

  • ☀️ Buenos días - Good morning (Used until 12 PM)
  • 🌤️ Buenas tardes - Good afternoon/evening (Used until sunset)
  • 🌙 Buenas noches - Good night (Used after sunset)
